Compact Track Loader or Skid Steer – Which One Do You Prefer?

Hey everyone,

I know there’s always a debate when it comes to picking between a compact track loader and a skid steer. CTLs handle rough terrain better with their tracks, but skid steers are usually cheaper to maintain and move faster on hard surfaces.

If you’ve used both, how do you decide which one to bring to a job? A few things I’m curious about:

  • What kind of jobs make a CTL the better pick?
  • Ever been in a situation where a skid steer actually worked better?
  • How do the costs compare in the long run?
  • Any go-to brands or models you swear by?

Depends on the job for me—if it’s soft or uneven ground, I’ll take a CTL all day, but for working on pavement or in tight spots, a skid steer is hard to beat. CTLs definitely cost more to maintain with track wear, but the extra stability is worth it for grading and dirt work. What’s everyone’s go-to brand for either one?
 
Good points, Jack! I’ve heard a lot of people say CTLs are worth the extra cost for stability, especially on dirt work. Have you ever run into situations where a skid steer actually handled rough terrain better than expected? Also curious about what kind of track wear have you seen on CTLs? I’ve heard some brands last longer than others. Anyone have experience with how different brands hold up over time?
 
Great discussion so far! I usually lean toward a CTL for anything involving soft ground or slopes, but I’ve seen skid steers hold their own in rougher conditions, especially with the right tires. As for track wear, I’ve noticed that proper cleaning and tensioning make a huge difference in longevity. Anyone here have a brand they swear by for durability?
