Crushed Concrete vs Limestone for Driveway

Hi!
I’m planning to rework my 600-foot-long gravel driveway before the snow hits. I’ve had it covered with 1 ½" limestone in the past, but I’m not a fan of how it doesn't settle well and how the larger rocks keep getting kicked to the side, especially with a couple of curves. I'm looking at smaller material this time. I found two suppliers nearby: one offers limestone and the other crushed concrete. The concrete is about $6/ton cheaper. I’ll be using a roller to compact the new material. Has anyone used crushed concrete for driveways? Does it work well, or should I stick with limestone?

Hi @heavydutyAlex! Crushed concrete can be a solid choice if packed down right, plus it saves you some cash. It can get dusty, though, and might drain differently than limestone. Are you mainly trying to smooth things out, or is runoff a big issue?

Good question! I’ve used crushed concrete before, and it holds up pretty well when compacted. It can get dusty in dry weather, but it binds together better over time compared to limestone. If you’re rolling it, that should help a lot. Have you thought about mixing both materials to get the best of both worlds?

That’s a good point, @DirtMover! Mixing both could help with stability while keeping costs down. @heavydutyAlex, are you dealing with a lot of heavy traffic on the driveway, or is it mostly personal use? That might affect how well each material holds up over time!

Good points all around! I like the idea of mixing both materials—might help keep costs down while still getting a solid base. @heavydutyAlex, are you leaning one way or still undecided?

Great ideas so far! I like the thought of mixing both materials too, it seems like a good balance between cost and durability. @heavydutyAlex, have you considered how each material might hold up in the long term with your climate? That could make a big difference depending on how much moisture or freeze-thaw cycles you get.

Solid points from everyone! I’ve seen crushed concrete hold up really well when compacted properly, but limestone does seem to drain better in some cases. @heavydutyAlex, are you planning to add any kind of edging or borders to help keep the material from spreading out over time?

Some great input here! @heavydutyAlex, if limestone was shifting too much before, crushed concrete might be a good call since it binds better. Are you planning on adding any geotextile fabric underneath to help with stability and drainage?

Crushed concrete is a solid option, especially if you're compacting it well—it tends to bind together better than limestone over time. It can get a bit dusty, though, so if that’s a concern, mixing the two might be a good middle ground. Have you thought about adding a border to help keep everything in place?

Great points from everyone! Crushed concrete seems like a solid option if it’s compacted properly, and mixing it with limestone might be a good balance. @heavydutyAlex, have you thought about how you might handle drainage or potential shifting in the long run?
