ANy ideas on how much it costs to rent a crane per hour?? Is there a big difference in rates depending on the type or size of crane?

Yep, like Santa said, highly dependent on size and in many cases the location. If you use one a lot I'd seriously look into buying, the breakeven cost is shorter than you might think.

In my experience you might get quoted an hourly rate but most places are going to then have miniums in regards to hours or days. Better to generally think in days or half days. Then depends on if you need an operator or any other additional certified staff.

These guys post rough rates on their site:https://www.bigge.com/crane-rental/operated-and-maintained/.

ProTip - if you're being charged for an operator treat that guy really nicely. Bring him breakfast/lunch and maybe he'll work faster to help you get shit done in a reasonable time.

What kind of project are you working on?

Rental costs vary a lot based on crane size, location, and whether you need an operator.

Yeah, depends on the crane type and location. A small carry deck crane might be a few hundred per day, while a big all-terrain or tower crane can run thousands. As @winston_wisdom said, most places charge a daily minimum, so even if you only need it for a few hours, you’re probably paying for the whole day.

Also, don’t forget about transport costs cause getting a crane to your site can add a big chunk to the total price. @dig, are you looking for a short-term rental, or is this for a longer project? Might be worth negotiating a weekly or monthly rate if you need it for a while.

Good points, @ConcreteKing! The transport cost can definitely sneak up on you, especially for larger cranes. Also, some rental companies offer discounts if you bundle multiple rentals, like if you need other heavy equipment too.

Hi!

Crane rental prices can really add up! Definitely worth checking minimum hour requirements and transport fees. @dig, what type of crane do you need?

Crane rental pricing can be all over the place depending on size, location, and whether you need an operator. Definitely worth asking about minimum rental periods and transport costs since those can add up fast. If it’s a longer job, maybe see if you can get a better deal on a weekly rate!

@Crane Chris, I see what you’re saying about buying making sense if you use a crane a lot, but that really depends on the type of jobs you’re doing. If you're only bringing in a crane a few times a year, rentals still make more sense—no maintenance headaches, no storage costs, and you can always get the right size for the job.

That said, if you're constantly renting the same crane type, I’d agree that the numbers start to lean toward ownership. Curious—what’s your breakeven estimate? How many rental days before buying starts to pay off?

Lots of great points here! Rental costs can add up fast, but factoring in transport fees and minimum rental times is key. @dig, have you checked with local rental companies yet? Curious what kind of rates you’re seeing in your area!

Good stuff in this thread! Another thing to consider is that some rental companies offer discounts if you bundle multiple machines (like a crane and a telehandler). Could be worth asking if you need other equipment for the job. @dig, have you nailed down exactly what size crane you’re looking for yet?

Lots of good stuff here! Crane rental costs can vary widely depending on size, location, and whether you need an operator. Most companies have minimum rental periods, so even an hourly rate might turn into a daily charge.

Transport fees can also add a big chunk to the total cost, and some companies offer discounts if you bundle rentals with other equipment.

@dig, have you looked into local rental rates yet? Curious to hear what prices you’re seeing in your area!

Lots of great advice here! I’d also add that some companies offer discounts for long-term rentals, so if you need it for more than a few days, it’s worth negotiating. @dig, have you gotten any quotes yet? Curious what rates you’re seeing in your area!

Lots of great stuff here! One thing I’ve always wondered is do rental companies charge extra for things like setup and teardown, or is that usually included in the rate? I imagine for bigger cranes, that could add a decent chunk to the cost. @dig, have you factored that in when looking at quotes?

Some really good info here! Definitely agree that transport and minimum rental times can make a big difference in cost. @dig, have you gotten any quotes yet? Curious what the rates are like in your area!
