Hey everyone!

Thinking about getting a flatbed trailer but not sure which one’s the best fit? With so many brands, sizes, and weight capacities out there, it can be tough to decide.

  • Any brands you swear by for durability?
  • Steel or aluminum—what’s better in the long run?
  • How do you figure out the right size and weight rating for your loads?
  • Gooseneck vs. bumper pull—when does one make more sense than the other?
  • Any must-know maintenance tips to keep a trailer in good shape?
If you’ve been hauling with a flatbed for a while, drop your advice! What’s worked for you, and what would you avoid?

Hey@DanMichaels288!

Good questions! A lot depends on what you're hauling and how often. If you're moving heavy loads regularly, steel trailers are super durable, but aluminum is great if you want something lighter and rust-resistant.

For size and weight rating, I always recommend going a little bigger than you think you need coz you’ll thank yourself later. Goosenecks are solid for stability and heavy loads, but bumper pulls are more convenient if you're not hauling huge stuff all the time.

As for maintenance, keeping the deck clean and checking tire pressure often can save you headaches down the road. What kind of loads are you planning to haul?

I’d second going bigger than you think you need, nothing worse than realizing you’re just a little short on space! Also, if you’re hauling in rough weather, aluminum’s rust resistance is a big plus. What’s your main use for the trailer—construction, equipment hauling, or something else?

Solid advice so far! One thing I’d add—don’t skimp on quality tires and brakes, especially if you’re hauling heavy or long distances. A good braking system can make all the difference when you’re loaded up. Also, if you’re planning on hauling equipment, tie-down points and ramps are a must. What’s your hauling setup looking like?

Great tips here! I'd definitely go for a gooseneck if you're hauling heavier loads regularly—way more stable. And yeah, aluminum is nice for rust resistance, but steel holds up better for real heavy-duty work. Definitely agree on getting quality tires and brakes too, nothing worse than dealing with a blowout mid-haul! What kind of truck are you pulling with?

Hey @LawnEnthusiast, great point about the gooseneck for stability! I also find that steel is the way to go for heavy-duty stuff, especially when you need that extra durability. As for the truck, I’m pulling with a 1-ton diesel, so I’m leaning towards something that can handle the weight without putting too much strain on the rig. What size flatbed are you running with your setup?

Good stuff already, but here's a little extra: If you're hauling big, heavy loads regularly, steel trailers are the way to go—they can take the abuse. Aluminum's great for lighter loads and rust resistance, but it’s not as tough when you’re pushing the limits. As for gooseneck vs. bumper pull, goosenecks give you way more stability for heavier stuff, while bumper pulls are easier to maneuver for smaller loads. Don't forget about quality tires and brakes; they can save you from a ton of problems down the road! What’s your main hauling focus?
