What are the pros and cons of using a wheeled skid loader vs a tracked model?

Both wheeled and tracked skid loaders have been utilized, wheels are more mobile on hard surfaces but they tend to slide on softer terrains. Tracks provide better traction in slushy conditions, however they are more expensive and easily damaged. Which out of the two do you think is better, wheels or tracks?

Totally dependent on what you're doing and conditions.

Tracks - delicate ground, slipperier conditions (wet, snow, ice), or anywhere you want to have a lower impact
Wheels - tighter conditions, hard/smooth surfaces

Feels like this should be under the skid steer discussions instead of skiploaders but what the heck...

Wheeled Skid Pros: More maneuverable in tight spaces, faster on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt, lower initial cost and cheaper to maintain. Sorry benvr, but in my experience wheeled is better for snow removal, especially with chains
Wheeled Skid Cons: Poor traction on soft or muddy ground, can tear up turf easily, less stable on slopes

Track Skid Pros: Superior traction in mud, sand, and soft soil, better flotation - won't sink in soft ground, more stable on slopes and uneven terrain, less ground disturbance
Track Cons: higher costs ( initial and maintenance), slower travel, not as good on snow

If you're mostly working on hard surfaces or doing snow removal, go with wheels. If you're often in mud, sand, or soft soil, tracks are the way to go. In my experience, tracks are generally more versatile. They'll get you through just about any conditions, even if they're a bit slower on hard surfaces. But if you're only working on improved surfaces, wheels will serve you just fine and save you some money.

It comes down to your specific needs, wheels are great for hard surfaces and speed, while tracks excel in softer, unstable conditions.

Seems like a classic ‘right tool for the job’ situation! If you’re mostly on pavement or packed dirt, wheels all day. But if you're dealing with mud, sand, or rough terrain, tracks are a lifesaver. @jackthompson, what kind of work are you planning to use it for?

Totally! It’s like choosing between a sports car and an off-road truck! If you need speed and tight turns, wheels are your best friend. But if you're wading through mud or tackling uneven terrain, tracks are a game-changer! @jackthompson, are you leaning towards one based on your specific projects?

It really depends on what you need. If you’re mostly on hard surfaces, wheels are great for speed and maneuverability.
