What's the best value lawn mower?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for a new lawn mower. I’ve heard good things about a few brands, but I’m not sure what’s the best value for my budget.

A few things I’m considering:
  • Gas vs. Battery – Is battery power strong enough for a decent-sized yard, or is gas still the way to go??
  • Self-Propelled vs. Push – Is self-propelled worth the extra cost, or is it overkill for a relatively flat lawn?
  • Brand Recommendations – I’ve seen good reviews on Ego, Greenworks, Toro, and Honda (though I hear Honda mowers are getting harder to find). Any standouts?
  • Battery Ecosystems – If I go battery, should I consider a brand that works with other yard tools?
Looking for something reliable and a good value for the price—not necessarily the cheapest, but something that will last. Open to both new and used options.

Would love to hear what’s worked for you!! Thnks in advanced.

Hey dig,

Great questions! Picking the right mower is a balance between budget, convenience, and what actually works best for your yard.

For gas vs. battery, it really depends on your yard size. If it’s under ½ an acre, a battery-powered mower like Ego or Greenworks should handle it fine (plus, no gas, no oil, no noise). If you’ve got a bigger yard or thicker grass, gas mowers still have the edge in raw power and runtime.

Self-Propelled vs. Push? If your yard is mostly flat, a push mower saves some money and keeps things simple. But if you don’t feel like pushing in the summer heat (or have any slopes), self-propelled is 100% worth it. I switched a few years ago and never looked back. :)

Brands? Ego and Greenworks are great for battery-powered options. Toro makes solid, reliable mowers if you go gas. Honda mowers are legendary, but yeah, they’re getting harder to find new. If you find a good used one in decent shape, it might be worth grabbing.

Battery ecosystems are a smart move if you’re thinking long-term. Ego and Greenworks have solid lineups of yard tools that use the same batteries (trimmers, blowers, etc.), so you could save in the long run if you go electric.

If you’re open to used, you might score a great deal on online Marketplace like Facebook or Craigslist especially this time of year when people are upgrading.

What size yard are you working with? And do you have a lot of trees or obstacles to mow around? That might help narrow things down.

Let us know what you end up going with.

Hey @dig, lots of great advice here already! If you’re leaning toward battery-powered, I’d say go for a brand with a solid battery ecosystem, you’ll appreciate having interchangeable batteries for other tools down the road. Also, if you have a lot of tight spots or obstacles, maneuverability is key, so maybe look into mowers with good turning ability. Do you have any specific must-haves, like mulching or bagging features?

Lots of good advice here already! If you’ve got a smaller yard, battery mowers are definitely worth considering, especially if you want to avoid the hassle of gas and maintenance. But if you’re dealing with thick grass or a bigger lawn, gas still has the edge. Self-propelled is a game-changer if you don’t want to push in the heat, but if your yard is flat and not too big, a push mower will do just fine. What’s your yard size and typical grass type? That might help narrow things down!

Sounds you have a lot of good advice here! One thing I’m curious about is how do battery mowers hold up over time? Do the batteries start losing charge capacity after a few seasons, or do they stay reliable? Anyone here had a battery-powered mower for 3+ years and can speak to the long-term performance?

Lots of solid advice here! I’d say if you’re going battery, definitely consider a brand with a good battery ecosystem, it makes expanding your yard tools way easier. Also, @Miguel Flores, good question about battery life! I’ve heard some hold up well, but others lose capacity after a few seasons. Anyone here had a battery mower long-term and can share their experience?

Gas vs. Battery – Gas. If the grid goes down you don't want your yard to go with it.

Self-Propelled vs. Push – If you consider yard work exercise get a push mower and quit being lazy. If you're trying to keep the work/time to a minimum then self propelled all the way.

Brand Recommendations – Been using Toro for over 20 years. Get one and call it a day. Can go used and still get something that'll last you years.

Battery Ecosystems – Ain't my thing but would trust these folks above on this, makes sense.

Check your craigslist and FB listings after Father's Day in the yuppie areas and you might find a good deal.

Lots of great stuff here! I’ll just add that if you’re going battery, check the amp-hour rating on the batteries. Bigger yards might need extra capacity or a spare battery to finish in one go. Also, self-propelled is a lifesaver if you’ve got hills or thick grass. What’s your yard size looking like?

Lots of solid advice here already! If you're leaning battery, definitely check the battery life and how easy it is to swap them out, nothing worse than running out of juice mid-mow. Gas is still king for power, but if your yard isn’t huge, a good battery mower should do the trick. What size lawn are you working with?

Great advice so far! @dig, have you thought about how much maintenance you're willing to do? That might help decide if gas or battery works better for you.
