Overview

Cold planing, also called asphalt milling, removes surface pavement with specially designed cold planer equipment. A cold planer can restore pavement surface to a specified grand or cross-slope by removing a part of the existing concrete or asphalt layer. Cold planers come in various sizes, from smaller, maneuverable machines to large planers for highways and large job sites.

Ground-up pavement is immediately recycled into a dump truck in front of the cold planer machine or inside of a storage compartment inside of the skid steer or loader. Recycled asphalt is commonly reused for shouldering roads or combined with new aggregate. Cold planers bring a rotating drum with carbide cutters into contact with the pavement at a specific depth and slope.
